Supporting Actress Blogathon: Blanquita in Alamar

This is part of the Supporting Actress Class-Of-2010 Blogathon hosted by Stinky Lulu. For more amazing entries go here.

As you know, this tradition is very special to a lot of people, so I’m more than happy to see the return of Miss Stinky Lulu and her creation, the Supporting Actress Blogathon, which I’ve been a contributor to since the Class of 2007 (Geraldine Chaplin). Also in 2008 (Candela Peña) and last year (Carmen Machi). So, without further ado, here we go…

Supporting Actress Blogathon: Carmen Machi in Broken Embraces (Los Abrazos Rotos)

This is part of the Supporting Actress Class-Of-2009 Blogathon hosted by StinkyLulu. For more great entries go here.

Keeping with the tradition, here at CLNY we’re continue to honor those performances of supporting acctress in a Spanish-languague movie in our favorite category: “obscure, ineligible, and no-chance-in-hell.” Just like in ’07 and ’08, that honor goes to another Spanish actress that you might know by now. For your consideration: Carmen Machi in Broken Embraces (Los Abrazos Rotos).

Without a doubt, Chicas y Maletas (Girls & Suitcases) is the best thing that Almodóvar did in his latest film (now playing in the States) and that distinction is because funny lady Carmen Machi is phenomenal, refreshing and fun to watch. In this little segment towards the end, la Machi plays Chon, an impeccably dressed and little chubby counselor for Social Affairs at City Hall who’s friends with Penélope’s character.

Blogatón de Actrices Secundarias 2010

¡Feliz 2010!

The Class of 2008: Candela Peña in Los Años Desnudos (Rated R)

For Your Consideration: Candela Peña in Los Años Desnudos (Rated R)

I know this choice is a hard one, and most of you haven't even heard of this little gem. But for those New Yorkers that were lucky enough to catch it during , at Lincoln Center, you know what I'm talking about. Last year, not that many actresses in the Spanish world impacted me from the very first scene as Candela Peña did in Los Años Desnudos (Rated R, or, literally, The Naked Years). Picture this: A thirty-year-old petite woman goes to an audition. She's very attractive, has done some indie theater and works as a supporting player in a drag show. No experience in cinema. As naive as she might sound, she's in total control. The person conducting the interview, a man that we never see, asks her "Aren't you hot in here?"
